<![CDATA[Parade Day]]> 41493 Wed, 17 Mar 2010 08:51:04 -0600 The Ancient Order of Hibernians St Patrick's Day Parade starts at noon today (3/17) at Oakland and Tamm and winds up at Manchester and Tamm. The neighborhood the parade travels through is known as Dogtown. It is inhabited by many Irish/Americans, but, it's not the first Irish conclave in the city. That hood was known as Kerry Patch and was located near the riverfront on the northside.

I've heard several theories about how Dogtown got its name. The one that's probably most credible involves coal miners working in what is now Forest Park. When the city attained the land to turn it into the park, the miners had to find a new place to live and work. They built ramshackle houses and cabins just south of the park on what was unincorporated land. They protected their property with guard dogs and there were apparantly lots of 'em.

Another one I've heard is from the 1904 World's Fair and has something to do with visitors from overseas who savored dog meat. So, now you see why I prefer the first theory!

<![CDATA[New Slogan for Morning Show]]> 41374 Tue, 16 Mar 2010 08:31:59 -0600 I had the pleasure to MC the St Patrick's Day Parade last Saturday and it was there that I enjoyed the antics of the Lawn Rangers from Amazing Arcola. It's a bunch of masked men from Arcola, Illinois parading their lawn mowers while tossing their brooms into the air - and sometimes even catching them! Silly? Yes, but their slogan says it all, "You are only young once, but you can always be immature." And I realized that slogan fit the Arch Morning Show perfectly. So, the Lawn Rangers may have come up with it, but Rick and I are stealing it. Pretty immature of us, eh?

Pictured above is one of the Lawn Rangers' mobile hydration devices. Insert burp noise here.

By the way, today (3/10) is Gene Simmons' longtime partner Shannon Tweed's birthday. It's also Basic Instinct star Sharon Stone's birthday. Who's older?

<![CDATA[New Elton Album With Old Friends]]> 40462 Mon, 08 Mar 2010 08:19:21 -0700 Spinner.com reports that Elton John is working on an LP with his longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin. It'll be Elton's 30th studio album and the first in 4 years. Also on board are old friends Leon Russel and T-Bone Burnett. T-Bone is coming off an Oscar win last night for Best Song - "The Weary Kind" from the Jeff Bridges film "Crazy Heart." And how about The Dude winning an Oscar?! If you haven't seen "Crazy Heart," I highly recommend you do. It's kind of like "The Big Lebowski" meets "The Wrestler."

Believe it or not, Jeff Bridges has been acting for 52 years! Here he is at 8 y-o on his dad's show Sea Hunt. He's in the episode called The Birthday Present.

<![CDATA[Who's So Vain?]]> 39604 Mon, 01 Mar 2010 07:18:50 -0700 A British tabloid claims to have unlocked the mystery of Carly Simon's "You're So Vain." But others are calling it another vain attempt at identification. Carly's publicist tells CNN that London's "Sun" newspaper jumped the gun when it reported that the singer's 1972 song was about record producer David Geffen. The paper apparently made the leap after Simon told "Uncut" magazine that her updated version of the song included a whispered clue. On Friday, the "Sun" reported that the name "David" was revealed and that it referred to Geffen. The tabloid added that Simon resented Geffen at the time because he had chosen to promote singer Joni Mitchell over her. Not so fast says Carly's publicist. The rep says although the man's name IS David, "it could be one of many Davids."

By the way, David Geffen will be inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame later this month.
