Tonight’s song was featured in the movie of the same name, where a wrongly-accused convict becomes a star when he gets out. The film is famous for the scene with an elaborate dance number taking place in prison performed to this song.
This song title is also the name of a collection of different fighting styles that were developed and practiced regularly in prisons. Some consider it to be America’s only “Native Martial Art”.
This was a massive hit. It was #1 on the US pop charts for 7 weeks, and also reached #1 on the Country and R&B charts.
