We're discussing 1979 tonight...the song, rather than the year. Lead singer Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins had a vision of driving down a road at the age of 18 on a rainy night & stopped at a traffic light. The vision denotes a "waiting" for something to happen, waiting at the light, but not knowing what will happen.
One could think of that crossroads as the bridge between childhood & adulthood, with the year 1979 being a symbolic year of maturing that just happens to rhyme with a lot of words.
