Tonight's lesson in Simon's School of Rock comes by way of Bjorn Ulvaeus & Benny Andersson of ABBA, as well as prolific lyricist for Elton John & Andrew Lloyd Webber, Tim Rice.  The song is One Night In Bangkok by Murray Head, somewhat of a one-hit wonder from 1984.

You may know Murray Head as Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar & the brother of Anthony Head from the TV show, Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Anyway, the song is actually from the musical concept album from the broadway show, Chess.  The song tells of the meeting of 2 great chess players, one Soviet and one American, in Bangkok, which is the capital of Thailand. Chess is a musical production that uses a US-USSR chess rivalry as a metaphor for the Cold War, but this song just contains double-entendres about the game of Chess compared to the Bangkok nightlife.

So, One Night In Bangkok is a song with a statement, but it has a great beat & you can dance to it.

Tune in for another installment from Simon's School of Rock, weeknights at 8 on 106.5 the Arch.
