First, let me offer a thank you for Julie T. being your substitute teacher tonight on Simon's School of Rock.
Tonight's lesson is a bit on the intellectual side, which is no surprise since Sting is a former teacher, himself. Tonight we focus on Spirits In the Material World by The Police, which is based on on the writings of Hungarian author and philosopher Arthur Koestler. Sting enjoyed Koestler's work, and the album Ghost In The Machine is named after one of his books. Koestler believed that outside influences could destroy our spirit and restrict our thinking. The "spirits" and "ghosts" Koestler wrote about were the innate higher functions that often get lost in the "machine" created by governments and corporations.
Ok, enough thinking for a Friday night. Enjoy the reggae beat of the song.
Tune in again Monday night at 8 for another lesson in Simon's School of Rock (with Jay Philpott as the substitute - I'm in Florida) on 106.5 the Arch.
