It's not armageddon, so don't freak out. However, a rare comet that can be seen my the naked eye will soon be viewable to us. Here's part of the press release from UMSL:
"Missourians should point their eyes skyward over the next couple of weeks to catch a glimpse of the comet Lulin. It will be closest to Earth, and likely brightest, near Feb. 24 and won't be back for another 1,000 years.
"While comets are notoriously unpredictable, it is estimated that it should be bright enough to be seen by the naked eye after mid-month, if you are under a dark sky," said Erika Gibb, assistant professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. "It is gradually getting higher in the sky, so that it will rise around midnight near Feb. 24. After that, it will continue along its path in the sky, getting fainter as it heads to the outer solar system."
The Comet Lulin was first discovered in 2007 by astronomers across the Taiwan Strait."
Go ahead & Google ye olde cosmic snowball. The only other times I've seen a comet with my naked eye was Hale-Bopp & Halley. It doesn't happen often.
- It rocks!
- Its just stupid.
- Its SPAM.
- Its offensive.
- Nevermind.
