As I played “1985” by BOWLING FOR SOUP today, I offered a fun game we could all play together while the song was on…it’s simple: Just count the number of references that BFS makes of other bands or recording artists. Several calls were close, but no one got it exactly, so here’s the count:
12 Bands…3 John Hughes movies and 1 cable network!
In order, “1985” namechecks:
WHITESNAKE
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN
MADONNA
NIRVANA
U2
BLONDIE
WHAM!
LIMP BIZKIT
DURAN DURAN
VAN HALEN
MOTLEY CRUE
OZZY OSBOURNE
I think the only band that doesn’t really belong on this list is Whitesnake, who weren’t really all that famous in 1985 – their big success (at least to the level of the other bands included) didn’t come until 1987!
The three John Hughes movies were: The Breakfast Club, Pretty In Pink and St. Elmo’s Fire. And of course, MTV gets a shout out a few times because they’re still famous for something they don’t do anymore – play music videos!
And YES, that is really Tawny Kitaen in the video – enjoy it and see if you can name the performers they imitiate (several were not mentioned in the song)!
