Tuesday night’s SCHOOL OF ROCK paid tribute to a fallen rock hero who passed away seven years ago, on December 22nd, 2002.
His name was Joe Strummer. You do know who Joe Strummer was, right?
Joe Strummer initially thought he’d like to be a cartoonist and also worked as a gravedigger for a time. But, It was seeing the SEX PISTOLS in April 1976 that showed him his true path, so he decided to form his own band.
He called it THE CLASH aka "The Only Band That Matters". He wrote most of the Clash’s music, including their big hits Rock The Casbah and “Should I Stay of Should I Go”.
The SCHOOL OF ROCK let New Orleans band COWBOY MOUTH come in for the “guest lecture” and pay tribute to Joe with their tale of a guy who broke up with his girlfriend because she didn’t know who Joe Strummer was!
And here’s an update on the legacy of Joe Strummer:
A Christmas card featuring artwork by the late Joe Strummer is benefiting a good cause this season. The onetime founder of The Clash painted a Christmas image before his December 2002 death. Now the painting has made its way onto holiday cards. The cards -- packaged in sets of six -- have been selling during the run-up to Christmas. All proceeds from this year's sales will benefit Strummerville - The Joe Strummer Foundation for New Music. The organization's goal is to provide support and resources to artists who might not otherwise cultivate their talents. Friends and family of Stummer -- born John Graham Mellor -- set up the charity in the year following his passing. For more information, visit www.strummerville.com.
