You hear the original sound of Counting Crows in this song, which was written when Adam Duritz was with a band called the Himalayans, based in San Francisco. In 1991 Counting Crows formed and they began playing coffee houses with this song on their set list. They were signed to a major label in 1993 and within a year they had exploded. The song I will play for you was the second single from their debut record which sold over 7 million copies. They appeared on SNL and David Letterman and toured with The Rolling Stones and the success quickly took a toll on the band. One member left and singer Adam Duritz suffered a widely reported nervous breakdown.
On VH1 Storytellers, Adam Duritz describes the song as a guy walking out the front door of his house, leaving behind the people in his life. He then feels like he's leaving himself behind as well.
