There are a couple of different versions of how the band came up with their name. They all somehow involve a dictionary, but how exactly the name was picked is a mystery, possibly because the band was under the influence of a variety of drugs at the time. One version involves an old Britannica World Language Dictionary, in it they found the definition, "the soul of a dead person, or his angel, showing gratitude to someone who, as an act of charity, arranged their burial." Another band member says they found the name in the Funk & Wagnalls Folklore Dictionary, when his finger landed on that phrase while playing a game of "dictionary”, so you can see how they my have been confused.
Tonight’s song was the highest-charting pop single the group would have until the surprise top-ten performance of "Touch of Grey" 17 years later.
