I just thought I would toss my 2 cents in about the Mark McGwire hiring--and go out on a limb and make a prediction.
There are just too many good reasons to not make this move. Big Mac has never coached at any level and now you're going to hire him to coach at the highest level ? Big Mac is a huge man with a big swing. Can he teach guys who are not big and powerful ? Was he really that good of a hitter ?
Then there's the scrutiny he will be under constantly. It started yesterday when he didn't show up for the press conference. And it will continue all spring training--all season. Is it fair for the players to have to put up with this distraction ? Will Mark McGwire be able to handle it. Will LaRussa ?
Those are some pretty good questions right there--and I haven't even addressed the whole steroid thing.
OK--here's my prediction. This Mark McGwire as batting coach thing will not last the entire season.
