This song had a very gradual build to success being released in July of ’84, but did not reach it’s peak until May of ’85 when it arrived at #13.  However in Germany, it was a huge hit reaching #1.  So popular, it was used as the theme to West German TV's coverage of the 1984 Olympics, a message regarding the issues surrounding the Soviet Union boycotting the games.

Despite the success of the song main writer of the band, Martin Gore considers it to be one of his least favorite songs. He prefers his songs to have subtle meanings so that people can find their own meanings to it, and feels this song does not fit that description. The band has not played it live since 1988.

From the album “Some Great Reward” released in 1984.
