On this day, September 14th, 1974 – Eric Clapton made it to the top of the Hot 100 Singles chart for the only time in his career when he hit #1 with “I SHOT THE SHERIFF”, which was part of his 461 Ocean Boulevard album…then considered to be a major comeback for him after recovering from the worst of his drug use, which had him sidelined for over 2 years.

Clapton had become intrigued with the music of Jamaica, known as reggae, and its main musical group, Bob Marley and the Wailers. Clapton’s version of the song gave reggae music a huge boost around the world and exposed it to millions for the first time – so today on the Archives, we thank Eric for his contribution but give the airtime to Bob Marley’s original version of I SHOT THE SHERIFF.
