The video for the Smashing Pumpkins song “1979” almost didn’t happen because a production crew associate did just that. He had the only copy of a key portion of the video and he left it on the top of the car and drove off. Yes, sometimes people do see something fly off and then instantly realize what they are missing but not this guy.
His punishment was to stand in the city center with a sandwich board that said “Lost Tapes, reward for return”. They never found the video and had to re-shoot.
But they got the video done and MTV played the heck out it.
This was the last song on the band's "Mellon Collie" album. It almost didn't make it! Lead Singer Billy Corgan told the producer he thought the song had potential and the producer told Corgan he had 24 hours to make it work. Corgan went home that night and developed some lyrics which are poetic at times like the part "you and I should meet, junebug skipping like a stone".
1979 went to #12 on the music charts and was the first in a string of hits for the Smashing Pumpkins.
