In 1970, married couples with children made up 40% of American households. Today, that number is only 20%. It looks like there’s a trend in when, and in what order adults experience certain life events. The age when people are getting married has climbed by 5 years since 1970. On top of that, while past generations may have lived at home until they got hitched, now adults are living on their own before they tie the knot. Having children has gotten pushed back too. The average age when women give birth to their first child has risen from 21 to 25 since 1970.
