Today is the birthday of one of the world’s most famous drummers, Rick Allen of Def Leppard. He joined the band at the age of 16 and as you may guess – he’s the youngest member of the group. On June 9th 1984, he lost control of his Corvette while street racing near his home of Sheffield, England. The car landed on its roof and Allen’s left arm was severed near the shoulder. Doctors tried to reattach it but failed. During Rick’s 4 weeks in the hospital, Def Lep singer Joe Elliott visited often and kept telling him to not give up on drumming. In fact, Joe helped Rick design the custom drum kit which Allen played in his one-armed debut with the band in August of 1986. He not only can play well, but fans have dubbed Allen “Thunder God.” Today is also the birthday of Red Hot Chili Peppers’ singer and songwriter Anthony Kiedis. He and bassist Flea are the only members of the band to appear on all of the group’s albums. I swear I’m not making this next part up. The original name of RHCP was Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem!
One year is all that separates Rick Allen and Anthony Kiedis. Who’s older?
